How To Obtain A PNG Work Permit

Download A PNG Work Permit Application Form
This post is in response to comments left here about ‘PNG work permits’ and also of numerous hits to this blog on the issue of PNG work permit.  So it is only proper to have a separate post to discuss the topic.

1. Could you please provide me step by step the procedures for PNG work permit application?
Firstly, as far as processing of PNG work permit is concerned this is the responsibility of the company/organisation (the Employer).  To employ an expatriate the local Company must have approved expatriate positions pertaining to its company organizational chart submitted to the Department of Labor & Employment.  When that is in place then it can hire expatriate employees and the standard procedures are that the Employee must submit to the Employer all the necessary documentation:

The check list above is from the PNG work application form which you can download here. These documents can be scanned and emailed to the company (the Employer).

When all the relevant supporting documents are on hand the company (Employer) will then submit your application for a PNG work permit to the Department of Labor & Employment or preferably use a registered agent as most companies do, to assess and subsequently process the application and finally to issue you with a PNG Work Permit if all requirements are met. After your PNG Work Permit is issued, an application for your work entry permit will then be submitted to the Immigration Division of the Department of Foreign Affairs to have a work visa issued.

2.  What are the documents required for Papua New Guinea work permit application?
The minimum documents required are as outlined in the lodgment check list image above. Keep close consultation with your prospective employer to ensure you provide all necessary document to support your PNG work permit application.

3. How many business days it will take to approve by Department of Labour in PNG?
It really depends but I would say about 21-30 days generally speaking if all the  requirements are met.

4. I have lost my school educational qualifications or certificates. Is this a problem for work permit application? I cannot get a replacement copy from the school. I have the employment letter and the job resume only.
Most expatriate positions in a company or organisation are approved by the Department of Labour & Employment consistent with its submitted company organizational chart.  As a prospective employee you will have to show proof that you are qualified or skilled for that particular position when initially applying for the position and it is also one of the supporting documents required to support a PNG work permit application.
Sometimes it is disregarded in accepted cases but it depends on the position, that is if it is a skilled position that cannot be filled soon by locally skilled personnel they will waive that requirement and process application.  You should consult with your employer whether or not providing certified copies of your qualifications or certificates will affect the outcome of your PNG work permit application.
